State High Too Strong For Terrace

Brisbane State High School continue their undefeated streak of the GPS
First XV competition, with a convincing 34-12 over Gregory Terrace.

Similar to previous matches against State High this season, the
difference was in the strength of the State High forward pack.

State High were first to score, kicking an early penalty goal.

A try produced by State High’s powerful forward drive left the score at 10-0.

However, Terrace hit back before first half with a wonderful display
from their backs, putting fullback Anton Kelly under the posts.

The remainder of the first half was close, the score remaining at 10-7
going in to half-time.

Following the start of the first half, State High captain Curtis
Bowning pushed over the line to extend State High’s lead.

State High number 8 Elisha Palupe also scored, with State High looking
to run away with the match late in the second half.

But with the help of several penalties, Terrace responded with a try
from centre Adam Smith.

Yet State High was too strong for the side, an impressive back display
resulting in winger Kevin Barker scoring in the corner.

The try left the final score at 34-12.

The win leaves State High firmly on the road to another undefeated
season, with only 2 games left to play in the 2010 season.

Gregory Terrace will try to put an end to Brisbane State High School
First XV’s undefeated season this week.

Round 6 of the 2010 GPS competition has State High comfortably at the
top of the ladder, with no team currently looking to threaten the
position.

State High last week convincingly defeated the only current threat to
their GPS crown, winning 45-20.

Terrace has had a lukewarm season, only securing wins against
Toowoomba Grammar and Churchie.

Terrace had their bye for the season last week, leaving them refreshed
for the upcoming match.

State High will be hosting the match on their sporting grounds on
Fursden Road, Carina.

The First XV match will start at 3:05 p.m. on the Kerry Mahony Field.

TSS End Undefeated Streak to State High

Brisbane State High School has convincingly defeated The Southport
School in one of the biggest matches of the First XIV GPS season.

Heading in to the match, pressure was in both camps, with neither side
wanting to concede their undefeated season.

Early penalties left both sides with a penalty goal each at the start
of the first half.

Some impressive forward drive saw State High prop Josef Horomia score
the first try of the match.

Southport quickly responded with an excellent try from captain Sean
Cox, putting the side in front for the first time.

Two more tries from State High during the first half saw the score at
20-15 heading in to the second half.

Curtis Browning scored a quick try after the second half, increasing
State High’s lead to 12 points.

Some penalties conceded by southport saw State High to continue
increasing their lead, with kicker ben Meehan converting two extra
penalty goals.

With State High giving away a barrage of penalties, Southport hit back
with an excellent try from winger Johnathon O’Connor, one of the
standouts from the Southport side.

However, State High’s forwards were simply too strong for the
Southport pack, the side consistently being driven back to their try
line.

Two late tries to State High lead to a runaway victory for the still
undefeated side, the final score 45 points to 20.

The loss for Southport puts their hopes of an undefeated season to
rest, and one less team who can bring State High’s undefeated season
to a halt.

Brisbane State High School 45 (C Browning 2, J Horomia, G Nolan, D
Alo-Emile tries B Meehan 5 cons) d The Southport School 20 (, J O’

Undefeated GPS Sides Face-Off

The two undefeated teams of the competition, Brisbane State High
School and The Southport School will face off this weekend.

The game marks the first meeting for the two teams, both yet to claim
a loss in the 2010 season.

But Southport School Direction of Rugby Adrian Blundell thinks while
there is certainly pressure, it has not gotten to the side.

“I think the boys have been looking forward to the game all year.”

“We are still very much in control of our own destiny.”

The Southport School sit only two points behind State High, who have
already had their bye for the season.

Last week saw State High convincingly defeat Churchie 42- 15.

Last week The Southport School had a very close match with Gregory
terrace, the low scoring match ending with Southport winning 10-3.

Mr. Blundell believes if Southport match up to the physicality of the
State High side, they are a very good chance of winning the match.

“State High have a very physical pack with some strong forwards and a
few lightning backs. If we adapt to their game I think we have a very
strong chance.”

The game promises to be one of the highlights of the GPS season, the
winner possibly deciding with will take the GPS premiership for 2010.

The match kicks off at 3:05 p.m. on the Kerry Mahony fields of State
High’s home grounds, Carina.

State High Run Away With Match

Brisbane State High School have defeated Chruchie over the weekend,
running away with the game in the 2nd half of the match.

The wet and muddy conditions kept scores low in the first half of the
match, with both back lines displaying a large amount of skill.

State High centre Walter Pataia and Churchie fly-half Hugh Willis were
two of the standouts of the first half, both scoring a try each.

Willis also kicked a field goal late in the first half, leaving
Churchie with an 10- 8 lead going in to half time.

But, after the second half State High ran away with the match, scoring
34 unanswered points against Churchie.

With both forward packs fairly even matched during the match, it was
the State High back line that made the difference in the 2nd half.

Both wingers for State High put many points on the board, with Kevin
Barker scoring a double, and Garret Nolan making a field length run to
score one of the later tries in the half.

With merely minutes left on the clock, Churchie displayed some strong
forward drive, putting Prop Joseph Clay over the try line right on
full time.

The final score for the match was 42 points to 17.

The last minute attempt by Churchie couldn’t save the game, but showed
there is still plenty of talent and potential in the side, who are
still yet to see a win.

The win for State High keeps their seasons still undefeated, and at
the top of the GPS competition.

Round 3: BSHS vs. Churchie Preview

Brisbane State High School will attempt to continue their undefeated
season this weekend when they face up against the Anglican Church
Grammar School.

State High have had a fantastic start to the season, achieving
convincing wins against BBC, Ipswich Grammar and Townsville Grammar.

The early streak of victories leaves State High on top of the GPS
ladder, tied with the also undefeated Nudgee College.

Churchie’s start to the season has particularly weak, with this year’s
side still yet to record a victory in the 2010 season.

Last week saw Churchie narrowly defeated by Gregory Terrace 23-17.

Yet some of the heavyweights of the GPS competition, including State
High and Nudgee College mean Churchie’s biggest challenges are still
ahead of them.

The game will be held on the Kerry Mahony Field of State High’s home
grounds on Fursden Road, Carina.

The match kicks off at 3:05 p.m.

In my brief time at RugbyUnion.com.au before their shut-down, I wrote several articles which since its relaunch have been removed from the site. This is frustrating considering it was my first paid journalistic endeavour, but what are you going to do? Thankfully, I kept a record of them all and will post accordingly. They can be seen in the Sports category.
